Improving food security in the territory is a vital goal, and local food production plays a key role. Creating positive change will take a community-wide effort – and it can start in our own backyards!
Inspired by the Victory Gardens of WWI and WWII, the Yukon Food Bank created the Unity Garden Program to encourage Yukoners to start growing their own food. Seed kits containing carrots, beets, potatoes, lettuce, and radish seeds, along with a guide to getting a garden ready to grow, were provided free of charge to anyone who wanted one. The goal: to encourage 100 new or renewed food gardens.
The Yukon Food Bank partnered with the Yukon Literacy Coalition to both provide the seed kits and support gardeners throughout the summer growing season.
This program was made possible thanks to the generous support of Whitehorse Motors and the Yukon Grain Farm.
